Why the Same SEO Fix Doesn’t Work on Every Website
I checked two sites I built, COLAClear and WellTeenMD, the same way. They needed opposite fixes.
Short answer: COLAClear was showing up in Google but nobody clicked, so it needed better wording. WellTeenMD barely showed up at all, so it needed trust, not wording. Same check, opposite fixes. The trick is knowing which problem you have before you change anything.
Google has a free tool called Search Console. It shows you the exact things people typed to find you, and whether they clicked. I opened it for two of my own sites and asked one question: what’s holding this one back? I got two very different answers.
COLAClear was showing up, but nobody clicked
COLAClear ranked on page one for lots of searches, yet almost no one clicked through. The reason: the words on the page didn’t match the words people typed.
People search “government warning font size.” My page said “type size,” which means the same thing but isn’t the word people use. So they scrolled right past it. The fix was simple: put “font size” in the title. That’s the difference between showing up and getting picked.
WellTeenMD barely showed up at all
WellTeenMD is a new site. In Search Console, it hardly appeared for anything. I went to fix the pages and found there was nothing wrong with them, they were already built right.
A new site doesn’t have a wording problem. It has a trust problem. Google doesn’t know it yet. You earn that trust with time, with reviews, and with a Google Business Profile (the listing that puts a local business on the map). Editing the pages again would have felt useful and changed nothing.
The lesson
- If you show up but don’t get clicked, fix your words. Match your titles to what people actually type.
- If you barely show up at all, words won’t help. Build trust: reviews, a Google Business Profile, and other sites mentioning you.
Same tool, opposite answers. Most SEO advice gives everyone the same to-do list. But the first step isn’t to change your site. It’s to open Search Console and find out which problem you actually have.
